had to compress it realy to fit the 500kb limit so here you have a 1600px height render:
the basic shape is a fluid dynamic simulation, the tentacles are particle flow based, the corals are made by some max modificators or procedural maps in combination with displacement
so everything would be easy to animate, which i realy would like to do if i had more computer power

again a somewhat bigger work i made, i started with a simple matte painting and added deatails by importing parts of photos i think i used about 20 different free stock photos wich i found in the internet, i the end i had about 100 layers in photoshop although i already colapsed a lot during the construction process which were quite a lot for my old single core computer :(

i payed more attention to create a nice mood than trying to make it as photorealistic as possible, and i know that the composition is not the best with just one centered midground element which is also a bit too contrasty and colorful

it also was a hard decission weather to add such a strong lens flare, because it takes away some of the attraction of the island itself
however i made the image they way i imagined it from the beginning so i am quite satisfied, what do you guys think about it ?
to achieve the hard edges i needed at least 3 subdivisions for the most parts so i ended up with about 1,8 million faces

how do you like it ?
